A little bit of Icings and Sprinkles to Success…
Nothing is more gratifying than seeing your passion turned into business.Whats even more amazing is that it is actually earning. This is the case of Icing and Sprinkles a small cake company owned by Ms. Ana Baluyot Yap. Her small venture have already produced many loyal clients in the past years.
“Before I used to bake brownies mga simple lang. Then may isang time yung isang Auntie ko kasi shes a baker also gumagawa siya ng mga birthday cakes. Then I said why not start wedding cakes ganyan…its a favor for my friend.Sabi nya make a nice cake. While designing the cake parang nakita ko na im enjoying what im doing. When I see other cakes sabi ko naaano ako na paano ginawa yun parang ang hirap yata nun ah but then I can do it”
Initially baking is Ana’s hobby. When she saw the potential of her baked goodies she proceeded to make it into a business. Her taste for sweets and talent for blending cake ingredients resulted in a smooth concoction of everthing nice and yummy.
“Everything is done by me.I still do everything. May personal touch pa rin… I still deliver the wedding cakes. So pag dating dun pag may sira like kung may retouch yun naaayos kaagad…Before mas marami ang orders ko but now kumbaga ang ano is the quality na lang. Basta I offer you the best quality. Even the price. Like if you compete with other big names hindi mo kaya talaga na babaan yung price. So its just the quality na lang minimaintan namin”
Ana saw her customers get married and have a family. Consequently she was also asked to make cakes for their childrens baptism birthdays and other special celebrations. Part of her entrepreneurial approach to business is the owner-customer relationship which is integral to her business success
“Yung mga ibang mga customers ko na they ask me to do their wedding cakes when they have kids na. I also do their birthday cakes baptismal cakes so tuloy tuloy. May isa nga I think for how many years na like 3 or 4 years lahat ng birthday cakes ng anak nya ako gumagawa…May iba naman like nagpagawa sila ng wedding cakes and then they start their own business. Mga party suppliers mga events coordinator na rin sila. So for their events ako na rin kinukuha nila”
Ana also addedd there is no shortcuts, no bypassing, no turning of corners when it comes to running any business. If it takes that you have to mop the floors or run errands yourself do it regardless of what people may think. In many similar ways this is how she started. She relishes every memory of her struggling years. Theres no subsitute for hard work, talent and faith in God.
“First of all you have to make your cakes really yummy. Dapat masarap talaga sya. Then practice lang ng practice. Kasi nga even me Ive been working for 12 years. Like before wala pa akong mga kids I would go to the States every year para mag attend ng mga seminars. Lately na lang yung mga seminars dito na lang sa Philippines Y.ou have to keep on studying keeping up with the trends and new materials”
